I had a mother-of-a-bride come into my hotel today to ask about banquet rooms.  It turns out that we couldn’t help her, but more than that I was trying hard not to show my visible shock at what she told me about the wedding. 

Preps are underway

I am amazed at my mother’s friends. So let me fill you up on the events that have been happening on my life these past few weeks. I know there is this certain detachment that I have felt with my online journal, partly because I think that so much egocentric writing is a sign of immaturity.

Superwoman Syndrome

I felt like I could save him. I thought that  I could make him change his ways and be for the better. I was dead wrong. I, like all the other girls who have made this mistake am diagnosed with Superwoman syndrome.

Camp Update

Dear Grandma,

I got my period on the Friday before I left for camp. Isn’t that exciting?!? I’m so excited because now I am a woman – almost.

Censorship and the Menstrual Cycle

I am through chapter 6 of Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret written by Judy Blume in 1970. So far, I have found this book to be a very fast read and very much in tune with an adolescent girl’s feelings and anxieties about coming of age.

Literary Reading – What I Think, Take One

Literary Reading. It’s a $0.50 word whose definition involves important “teacher language” like critical theory, pedagogy, texts, learning and the like. Literary reading is more than picking up a copy of the latest novel, glancing at the back cover, making the purchase, and placing it on your bookshelf to be a glorified dust collector.

Wedding Dreams

Often when I am driving back and forth between school and home, I use the time to reflect and think. Usually there are themes to the thinking: Fall it was how to get used to GVSU, Winter it was all about becoming a teacher, and this Spring has been all about getting married. I must be twitterpated or something.

Read-Arounds

I agree with Christensen’s theory on Read-Arounds. I think it is important that EVERYONE’s voice is heard. I feel it is especially important to hear your own voice and the other s as well in the class. By having the read-arounds in class everyone gets a chance to read their writing.
